American Crystal Art Glass Verlys Vase with Chinese Mandarin Chinoiserie Design

Beautiful crystal art glass vase made by Verlys of America. Known as the "Mandarin" vase, this molded glass vase depicts a sword baring a robed Chinese man or Samurai holding a parasol and likely a lotus or sunflower.

Also depicted are other flowers and what appears to be a Bird of Paradise perched in a peach tree. This thick, heavy piece has a clear ground with the decoration and designs appearing in high relief, accentuated by acid etching (creating a satin or frosted appearance in the manner of Rene Lalique).

This vase was of the Chinoiserie Series from the 1940s. This vase has the underlined pen etched "Verlys" in cursive on the underside, as you would find on Verlys of America pieces.

French Verlys pieces would have the word "France" in some form as well. Verlys began operation in France in 1931 as a subsidiary of the "Societe Anonyme Holophane Les Andelys". In 1935, Verlys of America was founded in Ohio as a subsidiary of the Holophane Lighting Company.
