This is one of the three finest Galle Landscape vases that we have ever seen.

The other two are in a private collection in Switzerland. The depth within the image is unequalled.

This type of decoration is frequently and erroneously assigned to various named lakes. The mountains themselves give the location. La Lignes Bleu des Vosges.

There are a few Galle vases with this name incised on the base with the same landscape and the in same colour palette. It is widely accepted that the landscape series was produced prior to 1905. Firstly, the majority of Galle's early work was inspired by botany, flora and fauna. Secondly the incised signature variant and those signatures with the underscore adjoining the foot of the letter'G' rather than intersecting the vertical stem of the'G' do not appear often before 1914. There are several famous images of the interior of the workshop showing large landscape vases being painted with bitumen resist and having the pontil polished. I have been involved in the antiques business since 1971. My career took a leap forward when I joined Bonhams in 1976. Some five years later I became head of the Decorative Arts department.
